St Seraphim is an 18th century Russian monk who lived at Sarov Monastery. He is the most renowned monk in the Eastern Orthodox Church. He is remembered for his monastic teachings and for teaching that the purpose of the Christian life is to acquire the Holy Spirit. We commemorate him on January 2. St Seraphim led a life of unbelievable prayer. The animals of the forest showed great affection for him. He was visited by pilgrims every day seeking his guidance and healing powers. He was kind and gentle towards others always greeting with the exclamation, “Christ is Risen!” He died while kneeling before an icon of the Theotokos. “Acquire a peaceful spirit, and thousands around you will be saved.” – St. Seraphim of Sarov
