This cross design is inspired by a 10th – 12th century Byzantine cross. The Greek word for fish is “ichthys”. Early in the first century, Christians made an acrostic from this word: Iesous Christos Theou Yios Soter, “Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior”. By the 2nd and 3rd centuries, persecuted Christians during the Roman Empire, quickly adopted the fish as a secret symbol to mark churches and to distinguish friends from enemies. The fish has many theological references in The Gospel as well. Christ fed the 5,000 with two fishes and five loaves, Christ called his disciples “fishers of men” and the parable of drawing in the net. This ancient Christian symbol still endures as a sacred and significant statement of Christians’ faith in Jesus Christ, Son of God, our Savior.
