In the Spotlight: The Evangelist Cross
The cruciform cross was a popular, prominent cross design in the ancient world, similar to our St. Olga Cross or Latin Cross today.
Due to widespread popularity of this design, there are many variations of this cross found in various excavations.
While Gallery Byzantium’s Evangelist Cross (pictured above) features Christ clothed in a robe surrounded by the four Evangelists, Mark, Luke, John, and Matthew; the Enkolpion with Crucifixion, from the Dumbarton Oaks Collection (pictured to the right, features Christ, the Virgin Mary, John the Baptist, and two unnamed saints.
Our version of this cross is a replica of a 6th century design found in a private collection.
