Helena, St. Helena, or St. Helen (c. 250 – c. 330), was a Greek native of the city of Drepana. She was the mother of the emperor, Constantine the Great, who reigned from 306 to 337. She is an important figure in Christianity because of her piety, her influence over her son and her own contribution of placing Christianity in the heart of Western Civilization. Tradition credits her with a pilgrimage to Jerusalem where she discovered the True Cross. St. Helena of Constantinople is celebrated on May 21st and is also the patron saint of new discoveries.
